Since mineral makeup came on the scene back in the mid 70’s, it has been touted for being the safer alternative to other types of makeup, such as liquid or powdered foundations. It is also widely advertised as being so safe, you can even sleep in it.

In all cases, makeup is designed to provide certain levels of protection for our skin, including protection from sun and free radical damage. Unfortunately, most makeup in liquid form also can cause occlusion of pores, whereby exacerbating acne causing it to become cystic in nature. This is another reason mineral makeup became so popular and has exploded over the past 10 years in sales. Women feel it is the healthier alternative to other cosmetics, and for the most part they are correct.

Some mineral cosmetics, however, will still cause acne and different forms of irritation to skin suffering from rosacea. This of course is dependent on the type being used, and if there are additional coatings or preservatives included in the ingredients listed.

Although mineral makeup contributes to keeping skin healthier, it is still no different in terms of sleeping in it. Skin which suffers from acne, especially, should be cleansed a minimum of twice a day. Mineral makeup absorbs facial oils, dirt, debris and pollutants we are exposed to throughout the day, and if left on our faces, will only be detrimental to overall skin health. You want to wash away all that our faces have been exposed to and go to bed with a freshly washed and cleansed face each and every day. If one were to find it necessary to extend wearing their makeup into the next day, then they would be way ahead of the game by cleansing, moisturizing and putting on a fresh mineral makeup application before beginning their night out.

Skin will be healthier, more revitalized and this process will aid in the removal of dead skin cells which also contribute to blocked pores. So by keeping skin free of excessive sebum buildup, pollutants from our air or skin cell renewal, fewer incidences of acne will occur, leaving the face glowing and more youthful in appearance.
