Living in harmony with the environment is a hot issue for any home or business. Being conscious of your choices is crucial to preserving our environment and developing the state of both your near surroundings and the entire globe.

If we are ready to revolutionize our way of living, we can browse among the many new developments in technology in the field of energy saving devices. New gadgets, like solar panels and windmills available for households can help us rely on mainly – if not entirely – on renewable sources of energy. We can have systems built in for utilizing rain water for flushing toilets for instance, or simply collect it to water our plants.

Before we go for a full refurbishing of our homes, there are so many daily tips we can do to use less energy, and waste less resources all together. One such change could be getting energy-saving devices instead of our old, energy-hungry ones. Electronic appliances are categorized into energy classes, with A+++ the most energy-saving class. You can also pay attention to reduce the hours these appliances are switched on or are left on standby. Although stand-by modes consume little energy, if you consider the large number of appliances that you use in your home, you will see how easily they add up to a high consumption. Often people also leave the telly on while they are busy in the kitchen or the bathroom for over half an hour. If we switch the gadget off during these occasions, you might already save some energy of your home.

Another major field for saving energy is certainly the lighting. If you want to reduce your consumption on this field, you can start with switching off all lights once you leave the room. If you are ready to invest some into more energy-saving light bulbs, LED lights are the best solution. These lights can reduce your lighting bill with 90% compared to halogen lights, and unlike other forms of energy-saving solutions, they neither flicker nor are sensitive to frequent switches. They also gain their full brightness the second they are switched on, so you do not have to worry about turning off your lights if you leave the room even for a few minutes. Another detail you can pay attention to is the direction of the light. If your lights have a wide beam angle, they might emit a light so diffused that you will not be able to see properly even if the light has a high performance. Wherever you can, go for narrower beam angle light bulbs and direct the light to the spot where you need it. This way, you will have the required amount of light where you work, and avoid illuminating areas unnecessarily, like the ceiling.

You can also save some energy on the heating without actually changing it. If air is circulated in the room, heat is coming from below, and the air is not completely dry you will already have a warmer feeling without turning up the heating. Try to use a vaporizer in the room to have a more humid and therefore warmer air. Insulation is a major issue in keeping heat inside during the winter, and outside during the summer. Though having the house insulated is a huge investment, you can start it at a lower level by adding some shutters to your windows, or simply a thick curtain will also do a lot. Floor insulation can be started with thick carpets or rugs.

For saving some water, the easiest way to start is by using less water for dishwashing. You can use a saver dishwasher machine, or for doing it manually, just rinse the dishes in still water instead of running. If you have the opportunity, you can collect some of the rainwater for watering your plants; this is not just saving water, but is also more nourishing for your plants.

Besides saving energy, there are many daily practices of protecting the environment that you can start straight away. Recycling is now available at most places in the UK, pay attention to recycle everything you can. Try to use less disposable things – plastic cups or bottles, try not to waste food – if you don’t have a composting system or a garden where you could use it, try feeding the neighbour’s cat or dog. Use as little toxic detergent for cleaning as you can, and reduce the amount of washing-up liquid you use. Biological washing powders are better for the environment, and conditioners are not that necessary, if you use less washing powder all together.

These little changes may mean a lot not only in our daily routines, but also for our near and global environment. Every little step you take will add to other’s and will lead to a major change for our world.
