You'll find a variety of unique holiday functions and customs that take place in the Atlanta area during the holiday season. Quite a few of them are meant for families to appreciate. Here are some of Atlanta's favorite holiday traditions.

The Children's Christmas Parade has been an Atlanta Christmas tradition for thirty years. The parade draws an estimated 300,000 spectators and is the biggest Christmas parade within the Southeast. This year the parade is scheduled for Saturday, December 4 from 10:30am to 12pm. The 1.5 mile parade course begins in town on Peachtree Street near the intersection of Baker Street. The route runs along Peachtree Street, Marietta Street, and ends on Centennial Olympic Park Drive. Spectators will see marching bands, dance groups, clowns, holiday styled floats, and giant helium balloons. The grand finale is going to be Santa Claus and the reindeer. The parade raises funds for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, helping to fund programs and equipment. Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is one of the largest non-profit clinical care providers for children in the country.

Centennial Olympic Park, a common twenty one-acre park in downtown Atlanta, becomes a wonderland of Christmas lights and decorations during the holiday season. Visitors could appreciate visiting Atlanta's only outdoor ice skating rink located at the park. The rink is open from November 19 to January 30, 2011. Skaters can enjoy gliding around the ice to the sounds of holiday music. A ninety-minute visit costs only $7, and rental ice skates are available for $2.

The "Lighting of Atlantic Station" in midtown Atlanta will take place on November 20 at 7:30pm. Over 250,000 lights will light up the eight block area. Preceding the lighting there will be children's activities, musical entertainment, and a visit from Santa. Young visitors will enjoy riding the Steel Mill Express Children's Train every weekend from November 20 to December 19. Artisans will display hand made items for sale in the open air "Holiday Shops." Guests to Atlantic Station will appreciate real looking snowfall around the Grand Christmas Tree Monday through Thursday at 7:30pm, hourly on Friday and Saturday nights from 6-9pm, and Sundays until 6pm. Some of Atlanta's finest holiday shopping is accessible in the stores at Atlantic Station.

As the holidays approach, bundle up the household and pick one of Atlanta's favorite holiday traditions to enjoy. Any of these entertaining seasonal activities will help get your family into the holiday spirit.
