Smartphones are increasingly popular, and there are now so many of them it can be hard to know what's good and what's not. Our guide takes you through the key points of the Google Nexus so you can judge for yourself. First, it comes with a 3.7inch display, is light and streamline and is a very attractive phone, meaning it easily stands up to the competition in the looks department from the iPhone and others. Made by HTC, it also benefits from their well-known good build quality.
Another good feature is the display, which is stunning. The 480 x 800 resolution is high, although given the size of the screen, you'd expect this to be somewhat higher. This is mainly an issue on apps such as Gmail, where the lack of pixels is slightly detrimental but overall it's not a major issue. The touchscreen is excellent and thought to be as good as or better than other phones with similar specifications. The fact that some colors are oversaturated is the biggest display drawback.
Another good feature on the Google Nexus is the camera, in contrast with the fact that this is generally a weak point on smartphones. Again, there are a couple of issues - while Google has worked on the speed of the camera app, this could still be massively improved. The Nexus eradicates most of the problems associated with HTC cameras, though, and boasts 5 megapixels and a good flash, which take good pictures. The lens is quick to focus and pictures generally appear as you want them to.
Where the Nexus isn't quite as good as you would hope, though, is in its telephony capabilities. It's fairly comparable to most other phones, but more was expected from it. The quality of the speakerphone is quite tinny and could definitely be improved, so it's not ideal for prolonged use. The earpiece is fairly standard compared to other phones and is clear and loud while you're speaking, but it could be more even. There are also connectivity issues similar to those with the iPhone, so the signal drops occasionally.
In terms of the software, the Google Nexus is fairly similar to other Droid operated phones, but there are some upgrades. The most obvious of these is in the homescreen navigation, which is much simpler than it was on previous versions of Android phones and includes some cute graphics. There's also an improved gallery option for storing photos, which is excellent, although the phone's keyboard is a bit clumsy. Overall, this is a good phone but with a few glitches that should be worked out in subsequent models.
