If your company is not improving, then what's the point of complaining when you are not growing? The only companies that are going to improve and gain the most market share are those who are not sitting back, complacent in what they are already doing and what they have already accomplished.
There are always markets to gain share in and new opportunities to take advantage of. You just have to put your company and your employees in a position to see the opportunities and then be in position to be able to take advantage of the opportunities. If your current set-up couldn't handle a huge order or a huge new account, then you are not ready to grow.
If something like that would almost stop your business, either because of lack of resources, employees or you simply do not have a plan in place to seize the opportunity, then you're not ready to take your business to the next level. This does not mean you should invest in a large amount of additional resources, but you must have a plan in place to get your hands on it quickly. This also does not mean you should hire an additional group of employees when there is currently not enough work to keep them busy. Although you should have some part-time people ready to step in and make a real contribution.
You also need a workforce that can step in to fill different roles in different departments. What is wrong with people from your office having been trained on how to use the machines on the ground? What is the problem of having guys on the loading dock knowing how to take customer orders? Cross training is a great way to have employees ready to meet any challenge presented to them and your business.
Having these plans in place before the crisis and before the big order comes in will help you to be ready for when it happens. We must be ready, because in business, you do not always get a second chance. If you can not make a deadline or show some other kind of weakness to a client or potential client, it is almost impossible to gain their confidence back. Once it is lost, you can safely guarantee that it is lost forever. Be sure you do not have a letdown like this, although it may be very difficult to do.
