Where Are All The Hotels In Silicon Valley?

Despite its reputation, Silicon Valley has fallen from its perch. I know that is a bold assessment of what's happened with the Tech Sector, but I beg your indulgence. Not long ago, the Valley was the epicenter of the computer and programming world. Now, in conjunction with the greater worldwide economic collapse, it has become a veritable Valley of Rust.

Many moons ago the palm-lined boulevards of San Jose and Mountain View were abuzz with energy. The hotels in Silicon Valley were once the jewels of the California hospitality industry. Now, every other business complex and strip mall is awash with "For Sale" or "For Lease" signs. Since 2001, the once-impregnable Valley has lost more than 30% of its jobs. A lack of lending, cost of development, and out-sourcing to Asian industries have left the Valley hurting.

In some ways, the Valley has been hurting since 1776. Before the Spanish penetrated the Santa Clara Valley in search of gold, the Ohlone Indians lived in a veritable paradise. In less than sixty years, all 10,000 of the Ohlone tribesmen and women were either dead or absorbed into the colonial system and scattered as slave labor. When the United States took the land from the Spanish in 1848, the Valley was exploited for its fertile alluvial soil and turned into farmland.

From farmlands to universities, innovators like William Hewlett and David Packard began to give schools like Stanford a worldwide reputation. Of course, now, Hewlett-Packard is a leading contender for an array of computer systems. Similarly, other companies rooted themselves in the Valley, among them the likes of IBM, Intel, Apple Computers, Yahoo, and CISCO. Soon, the Valley that bore fruit would be bearing microchips and processors.

Today, many pundits say the Valley is a husk of what it once was. Granted, most people would see this as progress. Maybe it is. Maybe the endless miles of concrete and street lamps are what it means to live in a first-class city. But, for those of us who can appreciate the old ways -- and old cultures -- it all seems a bit much. So, as the "For Lease" signs go up, what else should we have expected?

More Information:

Despite what the pundits say, the finest hotels in Silicon Valley stand ready to accommodate you and your business or personal needs. Book a spacious room today and save.
