Ever since people started putting things down on the ground to cover it, they've been trying to figure out ways to clean those things. From the marble floors of the Egyptians to the plushest carpet in a multimillionaire's bedroom, stuff has been falling on the floor and needed to be picked up. Back in 1876, Mr. Melville R. Bissell patented the first carpet sweeper aimed at helping us all out.
Like many inventors, he took several useful devices and put them together to work as one. The sweeper has bristles like a broom and a dirt catcher like a dustpan, and it's all attached to some wheels and a long handle to push everything along the floor with. Put it all together and suddenly keeping the carpet clean is much easier.
Carpet sweepers are used for more than just sweeping carpets, of course. They can be used for cleaning any floor surface or even throw rugs as long as they're heavy enough not to be pulled up by the sweeper bristles. This little tool is great for cleaning up dry messes in a jiffy, with no need to drag out the heavy vacuum and plug it in.
There have been plenty of changes to the carpet sweeper since the 1890s of course. The passage of over a hundred years brings a lot of innovation. You'll find a lot of improvements to the original design have made a lot of difference. If you like plain and simple like the original, you'll find it right next to the ones with all the fancy gee-gaws.
What you will find in the stores and on the Internet is an array of the low tech to high tech -- some with multiple roller bars or double dirt collection chambers. You will also find sweeper aided by electricity to provide faster roller movement and suction power. Without a power cord to trip you up, it's easy to grab the sweeper for quick clean-ups and zip around the entire house in no time.
These gadgets are easy to operate, lightweight, small and a breeze to use. They can be stored just about anywhere you have a couple feet of empty space. If you're tidying up after your kids or cleaning up the cut grass the dog just tracked in, these useful little tools can save your back and your time. No more need to use the full-sized vacuum for everyday messes. Having one of these carpet sweepers tucked in a closet can be a true chore saver.
