With the latest trend in high functioning espresso makers, households may be tempted to forget about humble drip coffee makers. This would be a mistake. You can pay very little for a basic machine, the kind you might find in a hotel room to make just one or two cups at a time. This will do nothing but brew your drink. For a larger group drinking more coffee, larger carafes make allowances, up to twelve cups at a time. Get your hands on the one you think you would like to buy to see if the filter is easy to remove, if there is a drip tray, water jug capacity and how easy it is to fill.
For catching the brew, many brands offer the familiar glass jug. Lids remain open, often for restaurants where pouring is a constant activity. Others have flip tops. Catch your favorite brand of java in a thermal jug instead. These work really well for coffee on the go to serve several people at a picnic, or when taking a long journey. Check these out for the option to brew one cup at a time straight into a thermal mug.
As far as heat goes, this is one feature to check into. How hot will a machine keep your brew? What temperature will it brew to? Another feature to look for, especially in a commercial setting, is the coffee pot warmer found on top.
Many appliances, regardless of their function, feature an LED display. Look for a bright display which is easy to read. This will show you what your machine is doing now or even tell you when it is time to change a water filter.
With every higher price band you enter into, expect more extras. One you might like is the water filter. Another would be a self-cleaning mode. Expect many to offer an automatic switch-off. One handy button on certain machines lets you pause the drip to pour, then resumes dripping after a short interval.
