Green or sustainable building has been developed to reduce the environmental impact of building practices. This concerns the entire lifetime of the building, from siting to design, construction, maintenance and even demolition. A building can be designed in a sustainable way that minimizes the use of energy, water, raw materials and land in a way that is still comfortable for its occupants.
OECD countries that have a trading agreement to work together for the stimulation of economic progress contribute substantially to the damage of the environment. The built environment in these countries is responsible for 15-40% of energy use, 30% of raw material use and up to 40% of global greenhouse gases and solid waste generation. Something has to be done to reduce this impact to save the worlds dwindling ecosystems.
Wave power has long been seen as a viable and powerful source of renewable energy. Wave power works by transporting energy from ocean surface waves, and the capture of that energy to do useful work such as for electricity generation for homes and business, water desalination, or the pumping of water.
High-efficiency windows and high-volume insulation in walls and ceilings are an easy way to improve the sustainability of existing homes. New homes are now being built with in-built measures to reduce energy use throughout the lifespan of the building.
The costs associated with green building are a major obstacle to the construction of environmentally friendly buildings, but it's actually not that expensive, with the estimated costs of green buildings estimated at just 5% higher than the cost of a conventional building.
The second machine to be deployed, which will be built for Scottish Power Renewables, will be installed alongside the E.ON device next year. The two companies will use the information gathered from the trials to look at larger, more commercial plans.
The ownership of sustainable buildings results in clear benefits for investors, ranging from drastically lower operating costs to improved marketability. As a result this increasing economic return, sustaining the natural environment and protecting social values are not incompatible. Sustainable construction is perhaps the best investment you can make today!
