Cameras have become an important part of smart phones. The Motorola Droid 2 is compared against rivals the HTC Incredible and the Samsung Fascinate for camera capabilities. While, the Droid 2 has seen some improvements over the Droid 1 camera, it cannot outperform the Incredible's impressive camera.
One of the benchmarks for the new generation of phones involves the camera quality. Only a few years ago, these cameras were low resolutions of 1 to 2 mega pixels that were more a joke than a serious photography tool. Today's line up of new cell phones come with more impressive cameras that start at 5 megapixel functionality. These cameras work when you take the phone out of the box, meaning that they do not require you to purchase any extra accessories. This allows you to spend your accessory budget money on such items as a beautiful case or a practical screen Protector. The subsequent paragraphs look at the camera and contrast it against the camera performance of rivals the HTC Incredible and the Samsung Fascinate.
The biggest complaints about the Droid 2's camera lie in the fact that it does not provide a front facing camera or Android's new 2.2 camera interface full functionality. The camera wasn't upgraded from the first Droid which means the same 5 megapixel camera with dual flash is offered. The camera features do have varying effects, modes, ISO, exposure on screen, and face detection over the old model. There is also a better camera interface provided in the new Android 2.2 programming that allows you to display some tools on the screen while you are taking pictures. Motorola doesn't have the full implementation of Android 2.2 on the new Droid 2. This means that you are still required to touch on the right part of the screen in order to expand the options tray. The controls also fail to rotate around as you turn the phone. Still, the picture quality is good, and the colors are bright. The photo subjects are recognizable, though the image quality could be sharper. Video clips at maximum resolution can be watched but are fuzzy.
The HTC Droid Incredible goes all out with its camera. This is not your typical five megapixel camera. The Incredible features an amazing 8 megapixel camera lens along with its dual LED flash. Pictures taken both outside and inside are fantastic and live up to the camera smart phone's name. Both sharpness and color are strong. Even the shutter lag is barely noticeable. Pictures taken at night are still a little dull and gray. Objects within the images are well defined. The The conclusion is that the HTC Incredible's camera is slightly better than the majority of cameras on other phones. For video taking abilities, the camera delivers good WVGA resolution.
Another rival to the Droid 2 camera is the Samsung Fascinate. This camera offers 5 megapixels with LED flash and HD quality videos. The picture quality is fairly decent, with photos taken mostly sharp in appearance. While this aspect may be better than that of the Droid 2 camera, the colors are not so bright in shots taken inside. Outside is where the camera shines. The pictures there are pretty good. The camera's greatest weakness lies in its lack of an active front facing camera lens that users might make use of in video calls.
The final verdict may surprise some fans of the Motorola Droid 2. This is a fine phone, but its camera is not the best when compared against its major rivals on the market. The HTC Droid Incredible takes home this honor.
