In recent years we have seen an increase in the demand for used cars. Unfortunately there have been more scams associated with these car sales too. Criminals realize that there is money to be made, and they have no scruples about exploiting any opportunities that come available.
Becoming a victim of one of these scams can be very upsetting, but there are things we can do to make this less likely to happen. The following are a few ways that you can ensure that you don't fall prey to those running used car scams.
- One of the most important things to do when buying from a private seller is to make sure that the person is who they have told you they are. It is not rude to ask for proper identification and if you don't do this then you are taking a reckless risk. Never by a car from somebody who appears at your door and fails to provide proper ID.
- Make sure you know what proper car documentation looks like; you will find examples of this on the web. If you think that the documentation looks as though it has been meddled with then this is a sign of a dodgy deal. If you see that there are missing documents then you should walk away from the sale.
- Be sure to compare the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on the documents with the one on the car. If the VIN on the car has been tampered with then this is another sign of a stolen car. You can use this VIN and do an online check to see if the car has been reported as stolen.
- Always trust your intuition when it comes to car sales. A lot of people claim to have had a bad feeling before they bought a dodgy car but they went ahead with the sale anyway.
