Are you and your friends considering having a short break in the United Kingdom of Great Britain? Even though overwhelmingly visitors having a vacation in Great Britain choose to stay in well-known destinations such as London, other people would rather take a vacation in Scotland. In the following article I discuss the Isle of Harris and why it is such an amazing destination for vacations.
While London might feature some of the most highly interesting museums and galleries in the British Isles and some of the most popular attractions the capital of England fails to appeal to all types.
Some tourists have a preference for far less hectic vacations and other people much prefer more exciting vacations for example sports vacations. Strangely the island of Harris, in Scotland's Outer Hebrides (or Western Isles), is perfect for both types of visitor.
Like a great many others staying on the beach for the majority of my summer vacation is not my thing. Please do not get the wrong idea, I often spend time relaxing on a sunny beach, and Harris definitely features some of the most breathtaking beaches in the country of Scotland, but, I also like to visit other places on my vacation. I really like to spend time just soaking in the atmosphere of the place, I also like to experience the local culture and especially enjoy sampling the food. To be honest I simply enjoy visiting new places each year and I try extremely hard attempting to discover something or somewhere totally unique and different. Most probably this is why I enjoy visiting the island in the Hebrides called the Isle of Harris and why I frequently decide to hire self catering houses on Harris.
One of the primary reasons people visit the Isle of Harris is to enjoy the landscape and culture of the islands. The Isle of Harris culture has, through the generations been powerfuly influenced by the Norse, Celtic, English and Scottish races. Today Gaelic is the most widely spoken language and though some speak English, it is most commonly their 2nd language. The Harris people are among the friendliest on earth and their hospitality is known throughout the word. The Isle of Harris people are justifiably proud of the breathtaking beauty of the island and try very hard to keep the place tidy and clean, so it is vitally important not to leave litter.
Remember that discarded litter doesn't just make the island appear unsightly it is also incredibly dangerous to wild creatures.
A further important thing to know is that the roads on the Isle of Harris are rather different to those found on the Scottish mainland in more remote areas single track road is still common, and you will need to know how to use passing places to allow oncoming traffic to pass but also to let traffic from behind to pass. Simply come to a stop on the left hand side of the road. However, if you are faced with an extremely large vehicle wishing to get past and the passing place is on your right hand side you may tuck yourself into it to allow the vehicle pass more easily but take great care not to drive off the edge of the road too much.

There are a few other islands to visit including South Uist, Lewis and North Uist. Why not consider staying in a self catering house on the Isle if Harris for and then stay in a room in a North Uist hotel or a hotel on South Uist for the rest of your holiday?
