One of the finest vacation destinations for walkers and water sports enthusiasts is the Isle of Skye. Taking a vacation on the Isle of Skye, situated among a group of islands known as the Inner Hebrides, is a unique experience. Every year a great many tourists arrive in the Scottish Highlands in search of the idyllic and mysterious scenery, but the most spectacular spots are to be found on the islands of the Inner Hebrides. In the following article I examine the factors which help make Skye such a wonderful place in which to take a vacation.
Places To Visit On Skye
Although not actually on the island, no visit would be complete without a day trip to Eilean Donan Castle. One of Scotland's most photographed monuments, the castle has also appeared in numerous films, including the 1985 cult classic, "Highlander." The castle is privately owned but, for a fee, you can wander around the well equipped castle or take a guided tour. The castle is only fifteen minutes from the Skye Bridge.
The Cuillin, the UK's only real mountain range, features some of Scotland's best mountaineering. The Black Cuillin are incredibly jagged and deep corries and steep cliffs and the range features a total of twelve Munros the highest of which is Sgurr Alasdair at 992 m (3,255 ft).
The Isle of Skye only has two Corbetts (Glamaig is the highest) and both are found in the Red Hills. The Black Cuillin are bare rock at their summits whereas the Red Hills (often called the Red Cuillin) are much softer with vegetation to the tops.
Glen Sligachan is the best place to access the Red Hills and is rather a nice place to stop for a picnic or bite to eat. Glen Brittle is considered the gateway to the Cuillin mountain range. Both glens are fantastic places to observe local wildlife. Whichever you decide to climb please ensure that you are suitable dressed and equipped as the weather can change for the worse amazingly fast and each year some people end up stranded in severe difficulties.
Local attractions include the Talisker distillery, the Glendale Toy Museum, the Bright Water Visitor Centre, Colbost Croft Museum, Armadale Castle Gardens and Museum of the Isles, Giant Macaskill Museum, Skye Museum of Island Life and Dunvegan Castle. Dunvegan Castle, the Macleods of Dunvegan and Harris' stronghold, commands a prominent position built on a dramatic cliff-top. Generally speaking the Skye climate is mild, and this is certainly evident in the wonderful castle gardens. Dunvegan is a great family day out and to add to the appeal you will also discover a restaurant and a superb craft shop within the grounds.
Overlooking the Isle of Raasay, Broadford is a seaside village which has much needed facilities but is also rather nice place to spend a couple of hours. The area has some splendid sea views but the number one port of call should be the small, but incredibly interesting, Skye Serpentarium Reptile World where you really can get some hands on experience!
