Updating Your Boiler

Check the condition of your boiler this winter before the cold weather sets in. If your boiler is inefficient or not working properly it may require updating. A range of gas boilers are available but only some of these are allowed to be installed in UK homes, due to recent changes to Building Regulations and a newly introduced Code to Sustainable Homes.

Condensing boilers are designed to recover more heat from the gas energy that is input into the heating system. The heat is recovered from the flue gases which are cooled into vapours. These boilers work at their highest efficiency at a low temperature, so they can feature fully modulating operation at all times, ensuring the output matches very closely to the heat demand.

Combination boilers, or "Combis," are the most commonly found boilers in UK homes. They operate by heating water on demand as there is no heat storage facility. Combi boilers are ideal for new build houses where space saving is often a premium. Now hybrid versions of combination boilers are becoming popular, as these allow for a small amount of water storage to be provided within the casing of the boiler. The efficiency of the boiler is reflected by the SEDBUK rating and if you are updating your boiler you should ideally be looking for a SEDBUK A or B rated boiler.

If you want an alternative to a combi boiler you could opt for a System boiler which provides users with a higher output capacity. Because of this System boilers are predominantly used for central heating. For smaller homes, Open vent boilers can be useful for saving space. They are designed to hang from walls, so they can be easily stored in the loft.

You could also benefit the environment by updating your boiler to a solar powered/gas hybrid, which only relies on gas when solar panels cannot generate enough energy.
