If you've never surfed before, it's probably not a good idea to start with a short board and try to hit the waves. Short boards are harder to control, so you may find yourself falling much more frequently. They're fun to watch from the beach, but people on short boards have typically been surfing for a while; they know what they're doing. As a beginner, you need a sturdy, safe board that gives you a decent amount of maneuverability. For a beginner, it's best to go with a longboard surfboard.

The longboard surfboard allows the surfer plenty of space to ride. They’re at least 8 feet long. Occasionally they can be up to 11 feet. This type of board is perfect for beginners or for seasoned veterans who just want more room on the board to work with. The extra space will allow you to keep your balance for a longer period of time. Longboard surfboards also let you paddle out into the waves quickly and easily.

Once you've spent some time on a longboard surfboard and want a bit more maneuverability, giving a fish surfboard a try is the next step. They have this name because the surfboards look like a fish. The tail is cut to resemble the shape of a fish and the body is shorter and more rounded than a normal longboard. It also has a pointy head. Intermediate surfers use these boards as a gradual transition from a longboard to a shortboard. The abbreviated short board length allows for sharper turns and greater control, but they're not quite as stable as longboards. If you're not ready for a fish surfboard yet, buy surfboards appropriate to your skill level, so you can learn at your own pace and protect yourself from injury.

So, if today will be the first day you ever step on a surfboard, it's time to have fun and enjoy your new experience. Keep in mind that you are not likely to be a pro your first time out on the water. A longboard surfboard is a great board to start out on as you learn proper technique. Eventually, you'll be skilled enough to graduate to a fish surfboard before making the switch to a shortboard and its ultimate maneuverability. To acquire those skills, you'd better start practicing now. So get your longboard and hit the water!
