The Kentucky Derby is just under five weeks away, and many horse race handicappers are already making their wagers on the potential thoroughbreds in the race. While Todd Pletcher’s horse Uncle Mo appears to be the odds on favorite to win the entire race, another famous trainer’s horse looks to steal the spotlight. Today we look at why Dialed In trained by Nick Zito, is locked in for a Kentucky Derby victory.
Nick Zito has been around the horse racing industry for over 30 years. However, it was 20 years ago this May, that Nick Zito was cheering on then three year old horse, Strike The Gold, a horse that cruised to victory at Churchill Downs. Now 20 years later and going for a Kentucky Derby hat trick, Zito feels he has not only the future Kentucky Derby winner, but perhaps a real shot at winning the Triple Crown.
Dialed In has flown under the radar in terms of actual thoroughbred contenders for the Kentucky Derby, and if not for Nick Zito’s legendary status, may have lower odds at winning the race. Dialed In first made an impression on horse racing purists back at the Holy Bull Stakes Grade III race in November. It was during that race, that after dropping to the back of the field, Dialed In appeared locked in entering the final stretch, as it came from the back of the field, to pull off a Zenyatta like victory.
Having won three races in four starts and finishing second in the missed victory, Dialed In has been considered by many fans, analysts and trainers alike to be a very special horse. This past weekend, Dialed In was considered to be a long shot at winning the Florida Derby, with odds of 20 to one. On the other hand, fellow Derby contender Soldat was considered the favorite at seven to two odds. In the end, just like the Holy Bull Stakes, Dialed In came from seemingly nowhere to win the race and thus volt itself from a relative long shot to one of the favorites in the Kentucky Derby.
