Sometimes, it is good to check if what you have made for your rack cards is appropriate. You can be too caught up with the sheer originality and creative concept of your color rack cards, only to forget about a few design norms that you might be violating. Eventually you might actually go too far and design something that is a bit too much and even to ineffective for custom rack cards.
So let me teach you how to detect if your rack cards have gone too much. Here is a list of signs that should tell you if what you are doing is a tad bit too intense or wrong for good color rack cards.
1. When it is expensive beyond its expected returns – The price of rack card printing should always be lower than your expected returns for your marketing. Otherwise, it won’t really give you the real results you need of course for the rack cards. Rack cards were made for the precise reason of turning up more profits and opportunities right?
So if the cost is just too high, printing them will become impractical. That is why it is always best to check first if the price is really fair and of course if you will gain more by doing that kind of color postcard.
2. When it gets too large for people to keep comfortably – Of course another bad sign of bad custom rack cards are rack cards that are too large. If people are having a hard time actually keeping that rack card properly because it is too big then most probably people won’t be carrying and paying attention to your rack cards.
So always be sensitive and see if your rack cards are in the appropriate size level. Even if you are using a standard rack card template, if it is too big for your market, it won’t really be the hit that you want it to be.
3. When the main colors go beyond three – If your main theme colors for your rack cards go beyond the number three, then you are probably going too far with your color rack cards. A good color theme for most printed materials is made up of two to three colors. Going beyond that, and you are risking a design that might look too intense and colourful. While certainly some people can pull a very multicoloured theme, in most cases it will fail. So it is best to always keep your color plan to 2-3 colors at the most.
4. When the text occupies 80% of the rack card area – If your text content occupies 80% of the rack card area, then most probably you have gone too far with your rack cards. While it is important to communicate the whole picture to your readers, having this much text content will actually burden your print and even turn away readers. Rack cards are supposed to be quick reads that people can finish in a few minutes. Making it into a novel will only decrease its "attractiveness" to people. So make sure you avoid this from happening.
5. When there are more than 10 main images and graphics in the cover – On the other side of the equation, having too many images and graphics in your rack cards can also be detrimental to them. You have gone too far when the rack card covers have 10 MAIN images all jostling for position.
Now, while this may work for collage type covers and catalog type rack cards, the sheer number of images will then impair your ability to actually communicate the details of your message through text. Balancing images and text is a better way to do this really.
