Slacklining is a balance sport that uses nylon webbing tensioned between two anchor points. Looking similar to a tightrope, a Slack line is different as although still under some tension, it isn't pulled as tight. This makes it more dynamic, as it bounces similar to a trampoline, making it harder to balance.
This sport has become extremely popular, as it improves Fitness, Focus, Balance and Strength. There are many different ways of doing this extreme sport including:
Urbanlining, which means doing in an urban setting such as a city park or out on the streets.
Tricklinging which is the most common way of doing it, as you can do this anywhere between two secure points. This can also be called lowlining as the line is normally close to the ground.
Waterlining, is placing the slack line over some water. This is perfect way of practicing new tricks and trying out new moves. People often do this over pools, or lakes as if you fall, you have a much softer landing.
Highlining is the more dangerous version of the sport, as you are normally a high distance above the ground or water.
To make slacklining more fun or dangerous, many people try to do tricks or stunts on these. Some of these can be extremely dangerous, so it's always best to practice, and many people will often wear a harness or have a safety net when participating in this sport.
Here are some of the most popular tricks, although there are new one's being created all the time. Basic ones are, standing, walking, walking backwards, turns, drop knee, opposite turn around, and bounce walking, moonwalk, throwing a disc around with someone from line-to-line, sit start, Buddha sit, mantle start, sitting down, lying down, jump start. Some of the more expert and advanced tricks are, back flip landing on the line, jumps referred to as "ollies," tree plants, front flip dismount, back flip dismount, doing push-ups, tandem walking, the tandem pass, piggy-back rides across the line, jumping from line-to-line.
This sport was first really noticed in the 1980's but is fast becoming the sport of choice for the adrenaline junkies out there.
