A Glass Retreat In Central Mexico

When a talented team of architects in Mexico first opened their firm, Parque Humano, they made it clear to the industry that their design concept was not rooted in mass production. Their chief concern was to provide for the "people and their needs," but the team also wanted to bring their immense concern for the natural landscape to the forefront of mainstream consciousness. The architects saw a sweeping abandonment of nature, a decline in agricultural lifestyles and increasing destruction of the unique Mexican landscape.

Parque Humano made it their collective philosophy to create an open source system of knowledge and experience, all with an aim to "finding new relationships between coexistence and nature." One of their most impressive projects is the Pabellon en el Bosque nestled in Valle de Bravo in central Mexico. The surrounding area includes a small town, also called Valle de Bravo, and Lake Avandaro. This area of Mexico is not made up of deserts or drylands like those found in the northern Mexican states. There are numerous mountain ranges, including Sierra de Temascaltepec and Sierra de Valle de Bravos. Numerous waterfalls keep the surrounding forests lush and green, providing a perfect winter home for the Monarch butterfly.

True to minimalist architectural ideals, the Pabellon en el Bosque is perfectly aligned with an existing alley of Pine trees. Facing the front of the single story pavilion is an entire wall of glass with sliding panels, bringing the smell of nature right inside. The side walls are solid, but flare out to meet another long glass wall, also with sliding panels. Connecting to the back of the pavilion is a stone patio with a sunken hot tub. From every angle within the building, guests can take in the surrounding natural features, day or night.

Within its meagre 860 square feet, Pabellon en el Bosque is ideal as a retreat, meditation and appreciation center for all Mexico has to offer in the way of nature. Since Valle de Bravo is just a two hour drive from Mexico City, the pavilion has been a sought after destination for many travelers to Mexico. In many ways, this is the anti-resort. There is no room service or spa facility, just the quietness of the trees and the ancient wisdom of the earth. One cannot find quaint roadside taco stands or Caterina doll boutiques close by. If those are the things you wish to experience, then head to Cancun or Yucatan. There are many fine resorts and hotels that will provide everything you are seeking.

The only way to get a real idea of the striking impact Pabellon en el Bosque can have on the psyche is to visit. Words do not do justice to its glowing presence nestled in the forests of Valle de Bravo. Go there. See it. Feel it. But don't leave any footprints.
