Bovine cartilage is a type of connective tissue comprises of mucopolysaccharides, protein substances, calcium, sulfur, and collagen. From early 1950s, the cartilage has been used for insertion in wounds.



Cartilage contains collagen and several types of glycosaminoglycans, including chondroitin. Some glycosaminoglycans in cartilage are reported to have anti-inflammatory, anti-tumour and immune system-stimulating properties. Bovine Cartilage contains several angiogenesis inhibitors that block the formation of new blood vessels which are necessary for cancerous tumours to grow. These angiogenesis inhibitors have been identified as Cartilage-derived inhibitor (CDI), Cartilage-derived antitumor factor (CATF) and cartilage-derived collagenase inhibitor (CDCI). Bovine cartilage is an ingredient in blood-and-bone fertilizers. Bovine cartilage, marketed as a nutritional supplement. Cartilage supplements and products are produced using the cartilage of a variety of animals, including cattle (bovine), sheep, sharks and chickens. Shark Cartilage supplements (made from cartilage from the heads and fins of sharks) and Bovine cartilage(cattle) Cartilage Supplements (made from the windpipes of cattle) are the most common. Cartilage is a dense connective tissue found in humans and animals.



Cartilage products have been used for the treatment of cancer, psoriasis, arthritis, wounds, osteoporosis, ulcerative colitis, regional enteritis, acne, scleroderma, haemorrhoids, severe anal itching and some forms of dermatitis.



Bovine cartilage is now established by extensive long-term quantitative and clinical research as a therapeutic food. Cartilage added to the diet in sufficient quantity (about 9 gram daily of quality Bovine cartilage) or topically applied has been shown to heal intractable wounds; be anti-inflammatory (e.g. gout); be analgesic in arthritic pain; restore movement in arthropathy; be analgesic in some cancer pain; stop tumour growth; and boost immune function.
